The former Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, said that the referendum Crimea correcting mistakes by the Soviet.
Therefore, the Crimea people’s desire should not be repaid with sanctions for Russia.
“First the Crimea combined with Ukraine under Soviet law, rather the ruling party (the Communists), without seeking the approval of the people. Today the people decided to correct that mistake. This should be welcomed, not subject to sanctions,” said Gorbachev as quoted the Interfax news agency.
Gorbachev asserted, Crimea referendum region is a reflection of the aspirations of the people, and he criticized the use of sanctions against Russia as a retaliation for the recognition of the referendum.
“Granting sanctions for a country should have a very serious reason. Sanctions must be enforced by the United Nations,” said Gorbachev.
“The desire of the people of Crimea to reunite with Russia is not a good reason,” said the last leader of the Soviet Union.
In a referendum held on Sunday March 16, 2014, as many as 96 percent of residents agreed that Crimea rejoin to Russia. Only about four percent who want Crimea remained under Ukrainian.
