Cristiano Ronaldo added another remarkable chapter to his extraordinary career Tuesday night, becoming the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments as Portugal cruised to a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Group K of the 2026 World Cup.
The Portugal captain delivered a vintage performance at Houston Stadium, scoring twice in the opening half to silence critics and guide Roberto Martinez’s side to its first victory of the tournament after a disappointing draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening match.
Ronaldo’s goals in the sixth and 39th minutes set Portugal firmly on course for victory before Nuno Mendes added a stunning free-kick, an own goal by Uzbekistan’s Abduvohid Nematov extended the lead, and Rafael Leao completed the scoring late in the second half.

“I am very happy,” Ronaldo said after the match.
“But for me, the most important thing is our hard work and the confidence we showed. The team played very well and improved a lot.”

The Portugal captain acknowledged the significance of the records but emphasized that helping the national team remains his primary motivation.
“Of course, records are always nice personally, but my objective has always been to help the national team achieve its goals,” Ronaldo said.

At 41 years and 138 days old, Ronaldo became the second-oldest player ever to score at a World Cup. Only Cameroon’s Roger Milla, who scored at the 1994 tournament aged 42 years and 39 days, remains ahead of him.
