The Central Asian side suffered a crushing 5-0 defeat against Portugal in a Group K match at Houston Stadium on Wednesday, ending its hopes of advancing to the knockout stage and leaving it rooted to the bottom of the standings.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Portugal, while Nuno Mendes, an own goal by Abduvohid Nematov and a late strike from Rafael Leao completed the rout.
The defeat marked Uzbekistan’s second consecutive loss of the tournament and became one of the heaviest defeats suffered by an Asian nation at this year’s World Cup.
Only Qatar’s 6-0 loss to Canada was worse. Saudi Arabia also endured a difficult evening after falling 4-0 to Spain, while Iraq was comfortably beaten 3-0 by France.
Jordan, making its World Cup debut, remains without a point after suffering a second straight defeat, losing 2-1 to Algeria and further complicating its hopes of progression.
As a result, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan all occupy last place in their respective groups following two rounds of matches.
Not every Asian team endured disappointment, however.
South Korea and Australia, both of whom impressed during their opening matches, were unable to maintain their momentum against host nations in the second round.
South Korea narrowly lost 1-0 to Mexico, while Australia fell 2-0 against the United States.
Despite those setbacks, both teams remain second in their groups and continue to control their own destiny heading into the decisive final round of fixtures.
Japan has emerged as the continent’s standout performer so far.
Placed in a challenging group featuring the Netherlands, Sweden and Tunisia, Hajime Moriyasu’s side has exceeded expectations by collecting four points from its first two matches.
The Samurai Blue opened their campaign with an impressive 2-2 draw against the Netherlands before delivering one of the most dominant performances by any Asian team at the tournament with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tunisia.
That result placed Japan in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage and reinforced its reputation as one of Asia’s most consistent performers on the global stage.
Iran has also remained competitive despite facing significant challenges away from the field.
Team Melli entered the tournament under difficult circumstances and has frequently voiced concerns regarding travel restrictions and logistical issues during the competition.
Nevertheless, Iran has managed to remain unbeaten through two matches.
A 2-2 draw against New Zealand was followed by a hard-fought 0-0 result against Belgium, leaving Iran with two points and a realistic opportunity to reach the round of 32.
Their final group-stage match against Egypt is expected to determine their fate.
Iran likely needs a victory to guarantee advancement, while Belgium appears well positioned to improve its standing against bottom-placed New Zealand.
With one round of group matches remaining, the performances of Asian nations have reflected both the growing competitiveness and continuing challenges facing football across the continent.
Japan has emerged as the region’s brightest hope, while South Korea, Australia and Iran remain in contention for the knockout stage.
For others, including Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan, the tournament has exposed the gap that still exists between emerging football nations and the world’s traditional powers.
