Francesco Bagnaia expressed disappointment after narrowly missing out on victory in the Sprint race at the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas held at the Circuit of the Americas, United States.

Despite finishing second, Bagnaia admitted the result was difficult to accept after leading much of the race.

Starting from fourth position, Bagnaia made an aggressive launch and quickly moved into the lead at the first corner of the 10-lap Sprint.

He maintained a consistent pace at the front, appearing in control for most of the race as he held off pressure from his rivals.

The decisive moment came on the final lap, when Jorge Martin executed a successful overtake.

Bagnaia was unable to respond in the closing corners and ultimately crossed the finish line in second place, just 0.755 seconds behind Martin.

“I’m happy with the podium, even though it hurts because I missed the win,” Bagnaia said, reflecting on the outcome.

Bagnaia explained that grip limitations in the latter stages of the race made it difficult to defend his position.

“I gave my best, maybe too much in the early laps. With the lack of grip at the end, I don’t think we could have done more,” he said.

He added that he did not anticipate being overtaken at Turn 12, which proved to be the turning point in the race.

While Bagnaia was battling at the front, his Ducati teammate Marc Marquez endured a difficult race.

The reigning champion crashed on the opening lap following a braking miscalculation, finishing down in 17th place.

The incident also involved Fabio Di Giannantonio, who was caught up in the crash.

Marquez later described the mistake as “fatal,” acknowledging that misjudging the slipstream and braking point led to the accident.

Martin takes championship lead

With the Sprint victory, Martin moves to the top of the MotoGP standings with 57 points, narrowly ahead of Marco Bezzecchi.

The result marks Martin’s return to the championship lead for the first time since his 2024 title-winning campaign.

The outcome at COTA highlights the increasingly competitive nature of the MotoGP season, with multiple riders contending for early supremacy.

For Bagnaia, the second-place finish still provides valuable points, but the missed opportunity underscores how small margins can determine race outcomes at the highest level.

As the season progresses, consistency and race management are expected to play a decisive role in the championship battle.
