Indonesia’s state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has temporarily suspended the KA Siliwangi train service in West Java after land subsidence damaged a section of railway track between Cibeber and Lampegan stations, raising significant safety concerns.

The disruption affects the Bandung operational region (Daerah Operasi II Bandung) and highlights the vulnerability of rail infrastructure to ground instability, particularly in areas with complex terrain.

The incident was first reported at approximately 7:55 p.m. local time on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Railway personnel responding to the alert discovered that the track structure at kilometer point 74+9/0 had been compromised due to land subsidence.

Initial inspections revealed deformation in the track foundation, making it unsafe for train operations. KAI promptly deployed an emergency response team to assess the situation further.

“Safety is non-negotiable. Therefore, we declare that the Cibeber–Lampegan railway line cannot be used temporarily until the repair process is completed,” said Kuswardojo, Public Relations Manager of KAI Daerah Operasi II Bandung.

Following a detailed inspection, the team confirmed that the affected section posed a serious risk, leading to the immediate suspension of train services on that route.

As a result of the damage, the KA Siliwangi (Train No. 345), which operates on the Cipatat–Sukabumi route, has been partially and fully canceled.

The service on Sunday was terminated early, operating only up to Cianjur Station instead of completing its full journey. In addition, the scheduled departure of KA Siliwangi on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 5:15 a.m. local time was canceled entirely.

KA Siliwangi plays a key role in regional connectivity, serving commuters and travelers across multiple towns in West Java. Its suspension is expected to cause temporary disruption to passenger mobility and local economic activities.

“We understand that this cancellation causes inconvenience to passengers,” Kuswardojo said.

KAI has mobilized technical teams to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damaged section and surrounding infrastructure. Engineers are currently evaluating soil stability, drainage systems, and the integrity of the track foundation.

Land subsidence in railway areas can be triggered by several factors, including heavy rainfall, soil erosion, underground water movement, and inadequate drainage. These risks are particularly pronounced in regions with uneven or mountainous terrain.

The Cibeber–Lampegan section is known for its challenging geography, requiring continuous monitoring and maintenance to ensure operational safety.

Repair efforts are now focused on stabilizing the ground, reconstructing the track base, and ensuring that all safety standards are met before reopening the line.

To mitigate the impact on passengers, KAI has introduced a refund policy for those affected by the cancellations. Travelers can receive a full refund of their ticket price, excluding booking fees.

Refund requests can be submitted through the Access by KAI application or processed directly at station ticket counters. Passengers have up to seven days (7×24 hours) from the scheduled departure time to claim their refunds.

The company emphasized its commitment to providing support and minimizing inconvenience during the disruption.

KAI is working to accelerate repairs and restore normal train operations as soon as possible. However, officials have not provided a specific timeline for completion, as the duration will depend on the extent of the damage and environmental conditions.

“We are making every possible effort to handle the situation in the field so that the track can quickly return to normal and train operations can run smoothly,” Kuswardojo said.

Safety testing will be conducted before services resume to ensure that the railway line meets all operational standards.

The incident underscores broader challenges faced by railway infrastructure in Indonesia, particularly in areas prone to geological instability. Land subsidence and related hazards remain ongoing risks that can disrupt transportation networks and compromise safety.

As climate patterns shift and extreme weather events become more frequent, infrastructure operators are under increasing pressure to enhance resilience through improved design, monitoring, and maintenance practices.

KAI has implemented various measures to address these challenges, including routine inspections, early warning systems, and coordination with local authorities and geological agencies.

Safety remains top priority

The swift suspension of the KA Siliwangi service reflects KAI’s commitment to prioritizing passenger safety above all else. Operating trains on compromised tracks could lead to severe accidents, making preventive action essential.

By halting services promptly, the company aims to avoid potential incidents and maintain public trust in the railway system.

For communities along the affected route, the suspension is likely to cause temporary inconvenience, particularly for daily commuters and businesses that rely on rail transport.

Local authorities may need to coordinate alternative transportation options to ensure continued mobility during the repair period.

Despite the disruption, public understanding is expected as safety concerns take precedence.

KAI has pledged to provide regular updates on the repair progress and inform passengers of any changes to service schedules. The company is also expected to review the incident to identify preventive measures and strengthen infrastructure resilience.

The temporary suspension of KA Siliwangi serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining robust and adaptable transportation systems in the face of natural challenges.

While the disruption has affected travel plans, KAI’s response demonstrates a proactive approach to risk management and a commitment to ensuring safe railway operations across Indonesia.
