Giacomo Agostini backs MotoGP 2027 rule changes to restore rider influence

Legendary champion says reduced technology will put skill back at the center of racing.

Giacomo Agostini has voiced strong support for MotoGP’s sweeping technical regulation changes set for 2027, arguing that the overhaul represents a necessary shift to restore the balance between rider skill and machine performance in the premier class of motorcycle racing.

The 15-time world champion, widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in the history of MotoGP, has long been critical of the increasing reliance on advanced technology in modern racing. With the current technical regulations entering their final season, the upcoming reset in 2027 is being positioned as one of the most significant transformations in decades.

The new rules will introduce a range of changes aimed at reducing technological complexity and enhancing competition. Among the most notable adjustments are the elimination of ride-height devices, stricter limits on aerodynamic components, and a reduction in engine capacity from 1000cc to 850cc.

For Agostini, these changes are not merely technical updates but a philosophical correction to a sport he believes has drifted too far from its core identity.

Agostini’s perspective reflects a broader concern within the sport regarding the growing influence of engineering over rider input. “I’ve been pushing for changes for some time,” he said in remarks reported by Moto.it. “There is too much technology nowadays.”

His critique centers on the idea that modern systems—such as automated ride-height devices—have reduced the physical and technical demands traditionally placed on riders. These devices, which automatically adjust the bike’s geometry to improve acceleration and stability, have become a defining feature of contemporary MotoGP machinery.

In Agostini’s view, such systems diminish the role of rider input, replacing instinct and control with automation.

“I would like to see the riders play a bigger role again, and for victories to depend more on them than on the technology,” he explained. “Today they press a button and the bike lowers itself. In the past, it was all in the wrist.”

The 2027 regulations, by removing these systems, aim to reintroduce a greater degree of manual control, requiring riders to manage the bike’s behavior without electronic assistance.

Another central pillar of the 2027 overhaul is the reduction of aerodynamic components, particularly the prominent winglets that have become ubiquitous in modern MotoGP design.

These aerodynamic elements generate downforce, improving stability and cornering performance at high speeds. However, they have also introduced new challenges, including increased turbulence that can make overtaking more difficult.

Agostini has been an outspoken critic of these developments, arguing that they fundamentally alter the nature of motorcycle racing.

“Wings belong on planes, not on motorcycles,” he said. “They don’t belong on racing bikes.”

The planned restrictions on aerodynamic wings are expected to reduce downforce, potentially leading to more dynamic and unpredictable racing conditions. By limiting the aerodynamic advantage, the regulations aim to level the playing field and place greater emphasis on rider skill.

From a technical standpoint, reducing aerodynamic dependency may also simplify bike design and reduce development costs, making the sport more accessible and sustainable in the long term.

The decision to reduce engine capacity from 1000cc to 850cc represents another major shift in MotoGP’s technical direction. While the change may appear modest on paper, it carries significant implications for power output, bike handling, and race strategy.

Agostini believes that lower engine capacity—and consequently reduced power—will have a positive impact on racing quality.

“When I raced against Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, John Surtees and Renzo Pasolini, we had 100 to 150 horsepower and still put on a great show,” he recalled.

In contrast, modern MotoGP bikes produce significantly higher power levels, placing increased strain on multiple aspects of the racing ecosystem, including chassis integrity, braking systems, tyres, and rider endurance.

“More power only puts stress on the chassis, the rider’s arms, the brakes and the tyres,” Agostini said. “Nowadays they have to manage everything just to reach the finish with the tyres intact.”

This observation highlights a key issue in contemporary racing: the need for riders to balance performance with resource management. Tyre degradation, fuel consumption, and mechanical limits often dictate race strategy, sometimes leading to more conservative riding styles.

By reducing engine power, the 2027 regulations aim to alleviate these constraints, allowing riders to push harder for longer periods without compromising reliability or safety.

Agostini argues that this shift will enhance the spectacle of racing by encouraging more aggressive and expressive riding.

“What we want to see is a rider giving everything—not someone riding to a target,” he said. “The fans want to see a rider doing things that not everyone can do.”

From a spectator perspective, Agostini believes that technical specifications such as engine capacity are largely irrelevant. What matters most is the quality of racing and the visibility of rider skill.

“850 or 1000cc? For the public it makes no difference—nobody is watching the engine capacity,” he said. “But with 850cc, you reduce the power, and that’s exactly what we want.”

The expectation is that reduced power and simplified aerodynamics will lead to closer racing, more overtaking opportunities, and a greater emphasis on rider decision-making.

Additionally, lower power levels could improve braking performance and reduce mechanical stress on components. Agostini noted that even leading suppliers such as Brembo are currently operating near the limits of their technology due to the extreme demands of modern MotoGP machines.

“With less power, even the brakes will benefit,” he said, suggesting that the changes could enhance both safety and performance consistency.
