Barcelona have officially completed the signing of English winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a major summer transfer move confirmed on Friday (29/5) or early Saturday morning WIB. The newly crowned La Liga champions for the 2025/2026 season have secured the highly rated forward on a five-year contract that will keep him at the Camp Nou until 2031, marking him as a key long-term investment in the club’s attacking rebuild.

In its official announcement, Barcelona described Gordon as a dynamic attacking talent who arrives at the club after an outstanding season in the Premier League. The club highlighted his productivity and technical qualities, noting that he finished last season as Newcastle United’s top scorer while also ranking as one of the team’s most prolific dribblers. Barcelona emphasized that Gordon’s ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations and create attacking opportunities made him an ideal fit for their tactical system.

The Spanish giants also pointed to his performances against them in European competition. “Gordon impressed in all three of his appearances against Barcelona in the Champions League last season,” the club said in its official statement. “He now joins the squad wearing the Barcelona shirt,” the statement added, signaling their confidence in his ability to transition seamlessly into La Liga football.

According to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona agreed to pay a fee of up to €80 million (approximately Rp1.6 trillion) to secure Gordon’s services from Newcastle United. The deal reflects Barcelona’s continued commitment to investing in young, high-impact players despite ongoing financial restructuring efforts within the club.

Gordon, 25, enjoyed one of the most productive seasons of his career at Newcastle United. Across all competitions, he made 46 appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing five assists. He accumulated a total of 2,869 minutes of playing time, underlining his importance as a regular starter and key attacking outlet for the Premier League side.

His performances in the UEFA Champions League were particularly notable. Although Newcastle United were eliminated at the round of 16 stage, Gordon delivered an impressive European campaign, scoring 10 goals and contributing two assists in just 12 appearances. His pace, directness, and ability to perform in high-pressure matches earned him widespread recognition across Europe.

Before joining Newcastle United, Gordon developed through the youth system at Everton, where he was regarded as one of the most promising talents of his generation. He broke into Everton’s senior team at a young age and made his first-team breakthrough in 2021 when he was just 16 years old. His early exposure to Premier League football helped shape his aggressive, forward-driving style of play, which later matured significantly during his time at Newcastle.

Gordon’s move to Barcelona represents a major step forward in his career, as he prepares to transition from the Premier League to one of Europe’s most technically demanding leagues. However, his immediate focus will remain on international duty. The winger is expected to join the England national team for preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he is projected to play a key role in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Following the conclusion of the World Cup, Gordon will officially report to Barcelona for pre-season training, where he will begin integrating into the club’s tactical system and squad structure. His arrival is expected to increase competition in Barcelona’s attacking department, providing depth and versatility across the forward line.

Barcelona’s decision to invest heavily in Gordon underscores their strategy of building a younger, more dynamic squad capable of competing at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions. Club officials reportedly view him as a long-term successor to their current attacking options, with his versatility across the front three making him a valuable tactical asset.

As anticipation builds around his arrival in Spain, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how quickly Gordon adapts to La Liga football and whether he can replicate the form that made him one of Newcastle United’s standout performers in recent seasons.
