Samsung unveils Ultra Slim OLED laptop display at Computex

Samsung Display introduces what it calls the world’s thinnest OLED laptop panel, targeting premium notebooks and gaming laptops with higher refresh rates, slimmer designs, and advanced visual performance.

Samsung Display has unveiled its latest OLED innovation at Computex, introducing a new panel technology that the company says could redefine the future of premium laptops and gaming notebooks. The newly announced Ultra Slim OLED laptop display was one of the most talked-about products showcased at the annual technology exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan, where major hardware manufacturers gathered to present their newest developments in computing, artificial intelligence, gaming, and display technologies.

Presented at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center during Computex, the Ultra Slim OLED laptop display is being promoted as the thinnest OLED laptop panel currently developed by Samsung Display. The technology represents a significant step forward in the company’s efforts to push OLED displays into increasingly compact, lightweight, and performance-oriented devices.

Samsung Display’s latest panel arrives at a time when laptop manufacturers are facing growing demand for thinner devices without sacrificing processing power, cooling systems, battery life, or visual quality. Among the technologies on display, the Ultra Slim OLED laptop display stood out because of its focus on mobility and engineering innovation. According to Samsung Display, the new panel reduces module thickness by more than 20 percent compared with OLED laptop panels currently being mass-produced. Achieving such a reduction required significant changes in manufacturing processes and display architecture.

The company explained that engineers developed a specialized etching process capable of reducing the thickness of both the TFT substrate glass and the encapsulation glass by more than 30 percent. Despite these reductions, Samsung claims the structural integrity and durability of the display remain intact.

This engineering achievement is particularly important because OLED panels are often viewed as more delicate than traditional LCD technologies. Reducing thickness while maintaining durability represents a major challenge in display manufacturing.

Samsung’s solution appears aimed at addressing a long-standing industry dilemma: how to make displays thinner without compromising reliability, longevity, or image quality.

The company also emphasized that the Ultra Slim OLED laptop display is not merely an engineering demonstration. Instead, it is designed to deliver premium visual performance suitable for demanding workloads, entertainment, content creation, and gaming applications.

The panel supports VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification, a specification that enables peak brightness levels of up to 1,000 nits while maintaining the deep black levels associated with OLED technology.

This certification is increasingly important in the premium laptop market, where users expect high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities for streaming media, professional creative work, and immersive gaming experiences.

Unlike conventional LCD displays that rely on backlighting systems, OLED technology allows individual pixels to turn off completely when displaying black content. This capability creates near-infinite contrast ratios and produces deeper shadows, improved detail, and more realistic image reproduction.

Samsung believes these advantages will help the Ultra Slim OLED laptop display appeal to users who demand both portability and visual excellence.

Gaming remains another key focus of the new panel technology. Modern gaming laptops increasingly compete with desktop systems, requiring displays capable of handling fast-moving content with minimal blur and maximum responsiveness.

To address this requirement, Samsung has equipped the Ultra Slim OLED laptop display with refresh rate options ranging from 165Hz to 240Hz.

These refresh rates place the panel firmly within the premium gaming category, enabling smoother gameplay and reduced motion blur during fast-paced action sequences.

Competitive gaming titles such as first-person shooters, racing games, and esports-focused multiplayer experiences benefit particularly from higher refresh rates. As a result, gaming laptop manufacturers continue seeking displays that can match the performance capabilities of increasingly powerful mobile graphics processors.

Samsung further strengthened the panel’s gaming credentials through support for VESA ClearMR 11000 certification.

ClearMR, or Clear Motion Ratio, is a measurement designed to evaluate motion clarity and blur performance. Higher ClearMR ratings indicate better visibility during rapid movement, helping users track fast-moving objects more accurately.

For competitive players, improved motion clarity can provide meaningful advantages by making targets easier to identify and reducing visual distractions during intense gameplay.

Samsung Display believes that combining high refresh rates with OLED response times and ClearMR certification creates a compelling solution for gaming-focused devices.

Beyond gaming, however, the company argues that the Ultra Slim OLED laptop display offers broader benefits for manufacturers and consumers alike.

One of the most significant advantages of the thinner design is the increased flexibility it provides to laptop engineers.
