Mexico midfielder Gilberto Mora etched his name into FIFA World Cup history on Thursday after becoming the sixth-youngest player ever to appear in the tournament during El Tri’s 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup.

The teenage midfielder came off the bench in the 66th minute at Estadio Azteca, replacing Alvaro Fidalgo as Mexico comfortably secured all three points in its opening Group A fixture.

Mexico’s victory was sealed by goals from Julian Quinones in the ninth minute and Raul Jimenez in the 67th, but Mora’s appearance quickly became one of the night’s most memorable moments.

At exactly 17 years and 240 days old, Mora entered the record books as the sixth-youngest player ever to feature in a World Cup match. He was also the youngest player among the 1,248 footballers registered for the 2026 tournament.

Born on Oct. 14, 2008, Mora currently plays for Liga MX club Club Tijuana, where his rapid development earned him a place in Mexico’s World Cup squad despite his age.

His appearance also established a new national milestone. Mora became the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a World Cup, surpassing the record previously held by Manuel Rosas, whose mark had stood since the inaugural tournament in 1930.

Although Mora now owns Mexico’s national record, five players remain younger in the overall history of the World Cup.

Northern Ireland’s Norman Whiteside continues to hold the all-time record after making his World Cup debut at the 1982 tournament in Spain at just 17 years and 40 days old. The future Manchester United midfielder remains the youngest footballer ever to appear in the competition.

Former Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o ranks second on the list. He was 17 years and 98 days old when he played against Italy during the group stage of the 1998 World Cup in France, beginning what would become one of Africa’s greatest international careers.

Nigeria’s Femi Opabunmi occupies third place after making his World Cup debut at the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. He was 17 years and 100 days old when he appeared against England in the Group F match.

Another Cameroon international, Salomon Olembe, sits fourth after featuring against Austria during the 1998 World Cup at the age of 17 years and 184 days.

Brazil legend Pele completes the top five. Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, he made his World Cup debut at 17 years and 234 days against the Soviet Union during the 1958 tournament before leading Brazil to its first world title.

Mora now joins that distinguished group of teenage talents who reached football’s biggest stage before their 18th birthdays. While his appearance lasted only the closing stages of Mexico’s opening victory, it marked the beginning of what many supporters hope will become a long international career.

For Mexico, the historic debut provided another reason to celebrate an impressive start to its home World Cup campaign. Alongside an important opening victory, El Tri also witnessed the emergence of one of the tournament’s brightest young prospects, with Mora already writing his name into World Cup history before reaching adulthood.
