Canada recovered from a first-half deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening Group B match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday night, with substitute Cyle Larin rescuing a valuable point for the co-hosts in front of a packed crowd at Toronto Stadium.
The result leaves both teams with one point after the opening round of Group B fixtures, with Canada edging into first place ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina on goal difference.
Canada entered the tournament without captain Alphonso Davies, who was unavailable because of injury, and initially struggled to settle against a disciplined Bosnian side that looked dangerous from set pieces.
Bosnia-Herzegovina created the first meaningful opportunities of the match, winning two free kicks inside the opening five minutes. Although Jovo Lukic’s early header lacked power, the visitors continued to apply pressure and maintained control during the opening stages.
Canada gradually found its rhythm midway through the first half. Jonathan David threatened from the right flank in the 15th minute, delivering a dangerous cross toward Tani Oluwaseyi that was cleared behind for a corner before the striker could connect.
Bosnia-Herzegovina continued to look threatening on the counterattack and eventually broke the deadlock in the 21st minute. After Richie Laryea conceded a corner, Amar Memic delivered an inviting cross that Sead Kolasinac headed toward goal. Lukic reacted quickest inside the penalty area to turn the ball into the net and give the visitors a deserved lead.
Canada attempted to respond before halftime but struggled to break down Bosnia’s organized defense, allowing the visitors to carry their one-goal advantage into the interval.
The hosts returned with greater urgency after the break and came close to equalizing less than 10 minutes into the second half. Laryea unleashed a powerful effort that appeared destined for the net before Kolasinac produced a crucial block, with the deflection striking the crossbar and keeping Bosnia in front.
Canada’s sustained pressure was finally rewarded in the 79th minute. Jonathan David threaded an incisive pass into the penalty area for substitute Cyle Larin, who calmly finished into the bottom corner. The effort took a slight deflection off defender Nikola Katic before beating goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, leveling the score at 1-1.
Larin’s impact immediately lifted the home side, which pushed for a late winner as the crowd roared the co-hosts forward. Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, remained composed defensively and denied Canada any clear opportunities during the closing stages.
Neither side was able to find a decisive breakthrough in the remaining minutes, and the match ended all square, with both teams beginning their World Cup campaigns by sharing the points in a competitive Group B contest.
