Australian canoeing star Jessica Fox produced a remarkable comeback to win gold in the canoe event at the Canoe Slalom World Cup in Germany on Saturday, responding in emphatic fashion after missing the kayak final a day earlier.
The 32-year-old arrived in Germany riding high after sweeping both canoe and kayak gold medals at the previous World Cup round in Prague. However, her winning streak was interrupted on Friday when she finished 16th in the kayak competition, failing to qualify for the final.
Fox quickly put that disappointment behind her with a composed and technically polished performance in the canoe discipline, where she once again demonstrated why she remains one of the sport’s most accomplished athletes despite continuing to manage a wrist injury this season.
“It’s the best feeling,” Fox said after securing the victory.
“I was disappointed yesterday not to make the final in the kayak, so to come out on this course today and put together a winning run means a lot.”
She credited her success to making the right decisions throughout a demanding course that tested competitors with difficult gate combinations and technical line choices.
“This course constantly makes you question your decisions and your line choices, but I managed to piece everything together,” Fox said.
Fox’s latest triumph adds another significant achievement to an already glittering career. She claimed Olympic canoe gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021 before successfully defending her title at the Paris Olympics in 2024, cementing her status as one of Australia’s greatest paddlers.
Spain’s Nuria Vilarrubla finished second to earn the silver medal, while Czech paddler Martina Satkova completed the podium in third place after another consistent performance.
The victory also reinforces Fox’s credentials heading into next month’s Canoe Slalom World Championships in Oklahoma, where she is expected to be among the leading contenders for another world title.
After recovering so quickly from Friday’s setback, Fox once again demonstrated the resilience and consistency that have defined her career, turning disappointment into yet another World Cup victory as the international season approaches its most important event.
