Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada delivered a standout performance to inspire his country to a historic first point at the FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Switzerland in their Group B opener at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Saturday.
Although defender Boualem Khoukhi grabbed the headlines with a stoppage-time equalizer, FIFA named Abunada the Player of the Match after the Al Rayyan goalkeeper repeatedly denied Switzerland throughout the contest and kept Qatar within striking distance until the final moments.
Abunada endured a difficult start after conceding a first-half penalty. The 27-year-old brought down Remo Freuler inside the penalty area in the 17th minute, allowing Breel Embolo to convert confidently from the spot and give Switzerland an early lead.
Instead of letting the mistake define his afternoon, Abunada responded with an exceptional display. He produced a series of impressive saves to frustrate the Swiss attack, denying Denis Zakaria from close range before making outstanding stops against Dan Ndoye and Ruben Vargas before halftime. His reflexes and positioning prevented Switzerland from extending their advantage despite sustained pressure.
The second half followed a similar pattern as Switzerland continued to dominate possession and create opportunities. However, Abunada remained composed between the posts while Swiss forwards repeatedly failed to capitalize on promising chances. Embolo narrowly missed adding a second goal in the 76th minute before Johan Manzambi also failed to hit the target minutes later.
Switzerland ultimately paid the price for their wastefulness in front of goal. Deep into stoppage time, Homam Ahmed delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Khoukhi rose above the defense to power a header past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and secure a dramatic equalizer for Qatar.
The statistics underlined Switzerland’s dominance. The European side attempted 26 shots, including seven on target, but Abunada stopped five of those efforts to keep his team alive before the late breakthrough.
FIFA praised the goalkeeper’s composure and influence after the match, recognizing his decisive contribution in one of Qatar’s most memorable World Cup performances.
The result also carried historical significance for Qatar. After losing all three matches during their tournament debut as hosts in 2022, the reigning Asian champions finally collected their first point in World Cup history, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive after an unforgettable evening in California.
