Frances Tiafoe made an emphatic start to his grass-court campaign on Monday by defeating French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the opening round of the Terra Wortmann Open, collecting his first victory over a top-10 opponent since 2024.
The American produced one of his most efficient performances of the season against the sixth-seeded Italian, who was playing his first match since finishing runner-up at Roland Garros. Tiafoe dominated behind his serve throughout the contest, striking nine aces, winning 34 of his 42 first-service points for an 81% success rate and never facing a single break point.
Speaking after the victory, Tiafoe admitted he expected Cobolli to experience a difficult transition following the emotional high of reaching his maiden Grand Slam final. He said he wanted to make life uncomfortable for the Italian and help him “come down to reality” in his first tournament after the French Open, according to the ATP Tour.
Cobolli entered Halle following a breakthrough fortnight in Paris, where he advanced to the French Open final before losing a five-set championship match to Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Tiafoe, meanwhile, had exited in the Round of 16 at Roland Garros but looked immediately comfortable on grass as he dictated play from the opening games.
The victory gives Tiafoe an important confidence boost heading into the heart of the grass-court season, where strong results could improve his seeding ahead of Wimbledon.
Second-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime also progressed in Halle, although the Canadian needed three sets to overcome Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime, who lost to Cobolli in the French Open quarterfinals earlier this month, responded well after dropping the second set and regained control in the decider to book his place in the second round.
Auger-Aliassime will next face American Learner Tien, who defeated German wild card Max Schoenhaus 6-2, 6-4. Elsewhere in Halle, France’s Terence Atmane and German wild card Daniel Altmaier also advanced to the next stage of the ATP 500 event.
At the HSBC Championships in London, eighth-seeded Tommy Paul required little time to dispatch fellow American Zachary Svajda 7-5, 6-3 in one of only three completed matches on Monday.
Paul delivered an outstanding serving display, blasting 15 aces while winning 33 of his 38 first-service points, an impressive success rate of nearly 87%. He also saved all five break points he faced to seal victory without surrendering his serve.
Canada’s Denis Shapovalov survived a stern examination from British wild card Jack Pinnington Jones before prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3). Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp also advanced after defeating another British wild card, Harry Wendelken, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The opening-day results highlighted the beginning of the transition from clay to grass, with several leading players seeking momentum ahead of Wimbledon. For Tiafoe, however, Monday’s victory stood out as both a personal milestone and an encouraging sign that his game is adapting quickly to the faster surface after a solid but ultimately disappointing French Open campaign.
