Czechia and South Africa battled to a 1-1 draw in a tense Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, a result that left both nations facing an uphill battle to reach the knockout stage.

The point apiece kept Czechia and South Africa in third and fourth place, respectively, in the group standings. With decisive final-round matches against Mexico and South Korea still to come, both teams now require favorable results to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Czechia made the perfect start, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Michal Sadilek. The midfielder found space inside the penalty area after receiving a well-weighted through ball before firing a powerful left-footed finish beyond the South African goalkeeper.

South Africa responded positively after conceding and nearly equalized in the 14th minute when Oswin Appollis struck a first-time volley that deflected off a defender and narrowly missed the target.

As the first half progressed, South Africa continued to push forward. Teboho Mokoena tested the Czech goalkeeper with a long-range effort shortly before halftime, but Czechia preserved its 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Czechia threatened again early in the second half with a powerful strike from outside the area, but South Africa’s goalkeeper produced an important save before the rebound was cleared for a corner.

The breakthrough South Africa had been chasing finally arrived seven minutes from time.

The equalizer came after Elias Mokwana’s attacking move led to a handball inside the Czech penalty area. Referee awarded a penalty after determining that Petr Sulc had blocked the ball with his arm while attempting to defend the cross.

Mokoena stepped up confidently and drilled the spot kick into the right side of the net in the 83rd minute, giving the Czech goalkeeper no chance and leveling the score at 1-1.

Neither side was able to create another clear opportunity during the closing stages, and the match ended all square after an entertaining contest in Atlanta.

The result leaves both teams with only a slim chance of advancing to the Round of 32. Czechia will conclude its group campaign against Mexico, while South Africa must overcome South Korea, with both opponents entering the final matchday as favorites based on their stronger squads and performances earlier in the tournament.
