Koeman defends defensive tactics after Dutch World Cup exit

Netherlands coach says deploying five defenders against Morocco was a calculated decision based on analysis, not fear, despite the team's penalty shootout elimination.

MONTERREY, Mexico — Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman defended his decision to deploy a defensive formation against Morocco after his side’s World Cup campaign ended in a penalty shootout defeat Monday, insisting the tactical approach gave his team the best chance of progressing.

The Dutch were eliminated 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time, with Morocco forcing the shootout through a stoppage-time equalizer before advancing to the round of 16.

Koeman, who opted for a five-man defense, acknowledged the criticism likely to follow but said he would make the same decision again.

“With this defensive approach, we gave away much less than we did during the group matches,” Koeman told reporters.

“That was positive, but also we were less offensive.”

The veteran coach, who has previously faced criticism for departing from the Netherlands’ traditional attacking style, said the tactical adjustment was designed specifically to counter a stronger opponent.

“You can think of the tactics whatever you like, but we gave away much less against a team much stronger than Sweden and Tunisia,” he said. “And if I had to do it again, I would do it the same way again.”

Koeman argued that the post-match reaction would have been very different had Morocco failed to equalize late in regulation.

“I also know that if Morocco hadn’t equalised with that late goal, there would be all sorts of compliments for me as the Dutch coach,” he said. “But now, probably, I’m going to be scolded for the fact that I chose five defenders. Once again, I believe it was necessary.”

The 63-year-old said he had discussed the tactical approach with his players before the match and that they supported the plan.

“You will criticise me, and that’s your right, but you watch football from the sidelines,” Koeman said during a tense exchange with reporters.

“I’m with the team. I knew what needed to be improved. This is how I improved it. And once again, if I had to do it again, I would have done exactly the same.”

Koeman rejected suggestions that his side had approached the match with fear.

“It was not about being afraid. That’s not what it was about at all. Why afraid? We had three strikers on the field,” he said.

“This is about a better defensive position, not out of fear, but based on an analysis of the opposition. You have your opinion, with all due respect, that’s fine. But I have a different view.”

Koeman added that he would take time to reflect before deciding whether to remain in charge of the Netherlands following the disappointing World Cup exit.

Morocco advanced to face co-host Canada in the round of 16 in Houston on Saturday.
