LONDON — Alexandra Eala produced the biggest Grand Slam victory of her career Saturday, defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6 (9), 6-2 to become the first player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon and the second week of a major championship.

The 21-year-old, seeded No. 29, saved two set points in a dramatic first-set tiebreak before taking control in the second set to eliminate the four-time Grand Slam champion on Centre Court. The victory improved Eala’s record against Swiatek to 2-1 and marked another milestone in her rapid rise on the WTA Tour.

An emotional Eala celebrated the historic achievement but made it clear her ambitions extend beyond reaching the fourth round.

“I’m really emotional,” Eala said during her on-court interview. “Maybe for someone like Iga, who’s won so many Slams, or maybe for someone like Serena or Venus, this achievement may seem small. But for someone who grew up in the Philippines, this is everything.”

“But because I’m emotional does not mean I’m satisfied. So next round, let’s go.”

The result followed Eala’s breakthrough victory over Swiatek in Miami last year and further strengthened her growing reputation as one of the tour’s most dangerous young players. She has now won seven of her 11 career matches against Top 10 opponents, including three victories on grass this season.

Despite arriving at Wimbledon ranked No. 32, Eala entered the tournament in strong form after reaching the Eastbourne final and capturing two WTA 125 titles this year. Before this fortnight, however, she had managed just one main-draw victory at a Grand Slam.

The opening set proved decisive in Saturday’s contest. Swiatek broke for a 2-1 lead before Eala immediately responded with a break of her own. The Filipina earned another break to serve for the set at 5-3, but Swiatek fought back to level before forcing a tense tiebreak.

Eala established a 5-2 advantage before Swiatek recovered to earn two set points. The Filipina remained composed under pressure, saving both before converting her fourth set point when Swiatek sent a forehand long.

“I was just thinking one point at a time,” Eala said afterward. “Once I saw my opportunities or once I see the ball coming, I go for it.”

Eala carried that momentum into the second set, racing to a 4-0 lead through aggressive returning and precise passing shots. Although Swiatek recovered one break and extended the final service game with several deuces, Eala closed out the match on her third match point with a forehand winner.

The statistics reflected Eala’s disciplined performance. She struck 24 winners against 21 unforced errors, converted five of seven break-point opportunities and saved eight of the 11 break points she faced.

Swiatek struggled to find her rhythm throughout the match, finishing with 32 winners but 44 unforced errors. Her attempts to shorten points by moving forward often backfired as Eala repeatedly punished her approaches with sharp passing shots.

Eala will next face 2024 Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini, who eased into the fourth round with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Maria Sakkari in just 66 minutes.

Paolini lost only 11 service points and saved both break points she faced to reach the second week at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. The Italian also leveled her career head-to-head record against Sakkari at 3-3.

The fourth-round meeting will also be a rematch of their Dubai encounter earlier this season, where Eala defeated Paolini in straight sets. Another victory would send the Filipina into her first Grand Slam quarterfinal and continue one of the standout breakthrough runs of the Wimbledon fortnight.
