Joao Neves was named man of the match after a commanding performance in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their Group K opener at the 2026 World Cup in Houston on Thursday.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a powerful header from a Neto assist, giving Portugal an early advantage before Yoane Wissa equalized for DR Congo in first-half stoppage time.
Despite Portugal controlling large spells of the match and creating multiple chances, their lack of clinical finishing prevented them from securing all three points.
“Joao Neves made a difference for Portugal with a superb header and his role in dictating play from midfield,” FIFA said in a statement.
According to FotMob, Neves recorded 96 touches, among the highest for Portugal in the match, underlining his influence across the pitch.
Operating as a central midfielder, Neves showed high mobility and was heavily involved in linking defense and attack, sharing control of the midfield with Vitinha.
His movement and positioning allowed him to consistently find space and contribute both defensively and offensively, including his well-timed header that left DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi with no chance.
Neves also posted an impressive 98% passing accuracy, including 80% success on long balls, while adding one key tackle and winning two duels.
Based on the performance metrics, he finished with the highest match rating of 8.1.
Speaking after receiving the man-of-the-match award on his World Cup debut, Neves said he was pleased with his performance but emphasized team success over individual recognition.
“It is my first World Cup match and I am happy with my performance. But as I always say, the most important thing is the team,” Neves said, according to FIFA.
He added that Portugal must continue improving despite the positive result, insisting the focus remains on winning future matches.
“There are a few things we need to improve. What we really need is a win. This squad is united and determined to get better,” he said.
