Kimi Antonelli delivered another standout performance by winning the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka Circuit on Sunday, extending his impressive start to the season.

The Mercedes driver secured his second consecutive victory, following his triumph in China, and further cemented his status as one of the most promising talents on the grid.

Starting from pole position, Antonelli controlled the race from the outset, completing 53 laps with a total time of 1 hour 28 minutes 3.403 seconds.

He crossed the finish line with a commanding margin, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri in second place and 15 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc in third.

The result highlighted Antonelli’s consistency and race management, particularly under pressure from established competitors.

A key moment in the race came on lap 22, when a safety car period reshaped strategies across the field.

Antonelli, who had not yet made his pit stop and was leading at the time, seized the opportunity to enter the pits without losing track position. He rejoined the race still in the lead, effectively neutralizing any advantage his rivals might have gained.

Following the restart, the young Italian executed a clean getaway and steadily built a gap, maintaining control until the checkered flag.

With this victory, Antonelli moves to the top of the Formula 1 standings with 72 points, becoming the youngest driver ever to lead the championship.

He now holds a nine-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who finished fourth in Japan.

Leclerc’s podium finish places him third in the standings with 49 points, while teammate Lewis Hamilton follows with 41 points.

McLaren drivers complete top six battle

The McLaren duo remain competitive in the championship race, with Lando Norris in fifth place on 25 points and Piastri in sixth with 21 points after his strong showing in Japan.

The results underline the tight competition among leading teams as the season progresses.

Antonelli’s back-to-back victories mark a significant shift in the early title race, positioning him as a serious contender for the championship.

The Formula 1 calendar now moves to the Miami Grand Prix in the United States, scheduled to take place from May 1 to May 3.

With momentum on his side, Antonelli will aim to extend his lead, while rivals look to close the gap in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive season.
