A large-scale ballistic missile attack struck Kyiv early Sunday morning, injuring at least five people, according to local government officials, in one of the most significant escalations of recent weeks.
The strike came after Russia warned it would retaliate following recent attacks in eastern Ukraine, intensifying fears of further escalation in the ongoing war.
According to reports from AFP, loud explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital, shaking residential buildings near the government district and forcing dozens of residents to seek shelter in underground metro stations in the city center.
“Ibu kota telah diserang rudal balistik besar-besaran,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, in a message posted on Telegram.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least five people were injured, with one person hospitalized for treatment.
Authorities reported that multiple areas of the city were impacted, including the Shevchenkivsky, Dniprovsky, and Podilsky districts.
“There are reports of at least four locations affected by the attack,” Tkachenko said. “Fires and damage to residential buildings are being reported preliminarily.”
He also warned that drone attacks were ongoing, adding that the threat of additional ballistic missile strikes remained active.
“Stay in shelters,” he urged residents.
Emergency services were deployed to the Podilsky district in northwestern Kyiv, where debris reportedly fell in a non-residential area. Officials also reported fires near a residential building in the Shevchenkivsky district.
The attack followed earlier warnings from Ukrainian authorities and the United States embassy in Kyiv about the possibility of a significant strike on the capital.
Those warnings came after Moscow vowed to “punish” those responsible for recent attacks in parts of eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian forces.
Kyiv had recently launched drone strikes on Russian-occupied territories in eastern Ukraine, which Moscow said struck a student dormitory and killed at least 18 people.
The Ukrainian drone operation, carried out late Thursday into Friday, was described by Russian officials as one of the deadliest attacks in recent months, also injuring 42 people in Starobilsk and trapping individuals under rubble.
Ukraine has denied targeting civilians, stating that its strikes were aimed at Russian drone units positioned in the Starobilsk area.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday that those responsible for the attacks would face “inevitable and severe punishment.”
The latest missile strike on Kyiv underscores the continued volatility of the conflict, as both sides exchange accusations and escalate military operations across multiple fronts.
Air raid alerts were issued across the capital during the early morning hours, with residents urged to remain in shelters as air defense systems attempted to intercept incoming projectiles.
In several districts, emergency crews worked to extinguish fires and assess structural damage, while medical teams treated the injured.
The attack also disrupted daily life in the capital, with public transport services partially suspended and access to some central areas restricted due to security concerns.
Military analysts have noted that ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv often aim to pressure civilian infrastructure and government facilities, although Ukrainian officials maintain that many incoming threats are intercepted before impact.
Despite repeated attacks, Kyiv has remained under Ukrainian control throughout the war, serving as the political and administrative center of the country.
The escalation follows weeks of intensified cross-border strikes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, with both sides targeting military infrastructure, logistics hubs, and energy facilities.
In recent months, air defense systems in Kyiv have been strengthened with support from Western allies, though officials acknowledge that missile saturation attacks remain a persistent challenge.
As of Sunday morning, rescue operations and damage assessments were still ongoing across affected districts, with authorities warning that additional strikes could follow.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant as air raid alerts continued to be activated intermittently across the city.
