New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended Eid al-Adha prayers in the Bronx on Friday while wearing an Arsenal away kit, drawing attention both for his appearance and his message on solidarity and public service.
Mamdani arrived at the prayer gathering dressed in a long-sleeved blue Arsenal shirt that extended to the knee, paired with long trousers. The outfit was identified as Arsenal’s current away kit for the ongoing 2025/2026 season.
In a post shared on X, Mamdani used the occasion of Eid al-Adha to reflect on the meaning of sacrifice and the importance of supporting those in need across New York City.
“Happy Eid al-Adha! Today, as we honor the Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden,” he wrote.
“It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To reach out to those in need,” he added.
Mamdani said the spirit of solidarity should guide his leadership as mayor, particularly in addressing everyday economic challenges faced by residents of the city.
“I feel honored to be the first Muslim mayor of New York, and I am determined to lead through solidarity,” he said.
“Together, we are working to ensure that New Yorkers can afford groceries, housing, and the childcare they need,” Mamdani added.
The mayor emphasized that collective action and social unity would be central to his administration’s priorities, particularly in tackling cost-of-living pressures affecting working families.
His appearance in an Arsenal kit also drew attention given the club’s strong global fanbase and recent success on the pitch.
Arsenal are enjoying a strong 2025/2026 campaign, having recently secured the Premier League title and ending a 22-year wait for domestic glory. The club is also preparing for a UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, marking one of its most successful seasons in recent years.
