Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli admitted he was left emotionally drained after an electrical failure forced him to retire from the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday, ending the Mercedes driver’s remarkable five-race winning streak and allowing Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton to significantly cut his lead in the standings.
The 19-year-old Italian had been running second with only four laps remaining when his Mercedes suddenly shut down because of an electrical problem. The retirement denied Antonelli valuable championship points and reduced his advantage over Hamilton from 66 points to 41 after seven of the season’s 22 races.
“I didn’t see it coming,” Antonelli said after the race.
“All of a sudden… the car gave up.”
The teenager, who became the youngest championship leader in Formula One history earlier this season, struggled to hide his disappointment after seeing a strong result disappear moments before the checkered flag.
“Of course, I feel very empty emotionally right now, because we’re trying to soak in what has just happened,” he said.
Antonelli’s retirement handed Hamilton his first victory of the season and ended Mercedes’ unbeaten start to the 2026 campaign, while also exposing growing concerns over the team’s reliability.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described the latest mechanical failure as unacceptable, noting it was the second retirement caused by reliability issues in the team’s last three races.
“We can’t DNF in a kind of regular, continued way, losing 25 points in the constructors’ championship in Montreal and losing another 18 points today,” Wolff said.
The Austrian said reliability had become Mercedes’ highest priority as engineers work to identify the root cause behind the recurring problems.
“Reliability, this is what we need to get on top of. And that’s number one. So nobody is happy about that. And we will leave no stone unturned to understand what happened,” he said.
George Russell, who benefited from Antonelli’s misfortune by finishing second, also acknowledged the setback was a major concern for the team despite his own strong result.
“It’s a shame to see how the race ended for him and obviously for us as a team and as HPP. We’ve had a few failures recently, so that’s a big concern for us,” Russell said.
Russell’s podium finish marked his first points after failing to score in the previous two Grands Prix, but the result did little to ease concerns over Mercedes’ reliability heading into the remainder of the season.
With Hamilton back in the title fight and Mercedes facing mounting technical questions, the championship battle appears poised to intensify as Formula One heads into the next round of the 2026 season.
