United States striker Folarin Balogun was named FIFA’s Man of the Match after delivering an influential performance in his side’s 2-0 victory over Australia in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday.

Balogun started at Seattle Stadium as the United States secured its second consecutive victory of the tournament, defeating Australia through a Cameron Burgess own goal in the 11th minute and an Alex Freeman strike just before halftime.

The victory lifted the Americans to the top of Group D with a perfect six points from two matches and secured their place in the round of 32. It also marked only the second time in U.S. men’s national team history that the country has opened a World Cup with back-to-back victories. Australia remained second in the group with three points.

Although Balogun did not score, the Monaco forward played a decisive role in breaking down Australia’s defense. His dangerous low cross forced Burgess into the own goal that gave the United States an early lead and set the tone for the remainder of the match.

“The United States striker is named Player of the Match thanks to an action-packed display, including the cross that led to his team’s opening goal,” FIFA said on its official website after the match.

Balogun’s overall contribution was reflected in his statistics. According to FotMob, he completed nine of his 14 passes for a 64% passing accuracy while recording 33 touches during the match.

Six of those touches came inside Australia’s penalty area, highlighting his constant attacking presence, while he also contributed defensively with a timely interception.

After the match, Balogun credited the team’s aggressive approach from the opening whistle for helping the United States control the contest.

“We wanted to start fast like we did against Paraguay, and that made the game much easier,” Balogun said.

The 24-year-old also praised teammate Alex Freeman after the defender scored his first World Cup goal and thanked American supporters for their backing throughout the tournament.

“I’m really happy for Alex Freeman. He’s very humble and down to earth, and he scored his first World Cup goal. Being able to repay the fans’ support on the biggest stage means everything to me,” Balogun said.

Despite already securing qualification for the knockout stage, Balogun insisted the United States remains fully focused on its final group match against Turkey.

“We’ll rest and recover. We still want to win the next match against Turkey,” he said.

He also urged the squad to remain grounded as the tournament enters its decisive stages.

“The most important thing is that we stay humble, stay simple, and I’m confident we can continue getting good results,” Balogun added.

United States coach Mauricio Pochettino praised the collective effort of his players after another disciplined performance, emphasizing that success at a World Cup requires contributions from every member of the squad.

“When the draw was made in December, I already knew this would be a difficult match,” Pochettino said.

“I’m very happy for our supporters. Christian Pulisic couldn’t play, but if we want to win this competition, we need the entire squad,” he added.
