The United States booked its place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 in their second Group D match on Friday, extending its perfect start to the tournament.
Played at Seattle Stadium, the victory lifted the United States to the top of the Group D standings with six points from two matches, making the Americans only the second team after Mexico to secure qualification for the round of 32.
Australia remained second with three points and will face Turkey in its final group match, while the United States will conclude the group stage against Turkey.
The Americans took the lead in the 11th minute through an own goal by Australia defender Cameron Burgess, before Alex Freeman doubled the advantage just before halftime to seal a comfortable victory.
The result also produced a unique World Cup milestone. The United States became the first team in tournament history to benefit from own goals in consecutive matches after Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla had also put through his own net in the Americans’ opening victory.
The tournament has now produced seven own goals, the second-highest total in a single World Cup, trailing only the 2018 edition.
Australia threatened first when a misplaced pass from Alex Freeman gifted Mohamed Toure an early opportunity inside the opening minute, but his effort was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Matt Freese.
The United States responded with increasing pressure. Sergiño Dest tested the Australian defense with a well-struck effort after receiving a pass from Weston McKennie, only for Burgess to block the attempt.
Moments later, Burgess’ luck ran out. Attempting to intercept a low cross from Folarin Balogun, the defender inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, handing the United States a deserved lead.
Both teams continued to create chances before halftime, but the Americans struck again in the 43rd minute when Freeman converted following a Sergiño Dest free kick.
The assistant referee initially flagged Freeman for offside, but after referee Felix Zwayer reviewed the play using the video assistant referee system, the goal was awarded, giving the hosts a commanding 2-0 advantage at the break.
Australia coach Tony Popovic responded by making a triple substitution early in the second half, introducing Jason Geria, Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda in an effort to inject fresh energy into his side.
Metcalfe and Irankunda had both scored against Turkey in Australia’s opening Group D match, and the changes briefly improved the Socceroos’ attacking intensity.
Despite Australia’s renewed urgency, the United States remained dangerous on the counterattack. Balogun nearly added a third goal in the 51st minute, but Alessandro Circati produced an important block to deny the striker.
Australia also created opportunities through substitute Cristian Volpato, whose powerful effort sailed over the crossbar, while Metcalfe tested the American defense with a long-range attempt that was comfortably handled by goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
Neither side managed to find another breakthrough during the closing stages as the United States comfortably protected its two-goal lead until the final whistle.
The victory leaves Mauricio Pochettino’s side firmly in control of Group D heading into the final round of matches, while Australia must now earn a positive result against Turkey to keep its hopes of advancing alive.
