France coach Didier Deschamps credited substitute Bradley Barcola for providing the spark that transformed his side’s performance after Les Bleus defeated Senegal 3-1 in their opening Group I match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.

France struggled to find its rhythm during a tense first half at New Jersey Stadium before producing a far more dynamic display after the break. The tactical adjustments paid off as Kylian Mbappe struck twice, in the 66th minute and deep into stoppage time, while Barcola added a decisive goal in the 82nd minute to seal an impressive opening victory.

Senegal managed only a late consolation through Ibrahim Mbaye in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, briefly raising hopes of an unlikely comeback before Mbappe restored France’s two-goal cushion moments later.

The result handed France three valuable points to begin its World Cup campaign and reinforced its status as one of the tournament favorites.

Deschamps admitted his team lacked fluency before halftime but said tactical changes involving Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise helped unlock Senegal’s disciplined defense.

“Once we found our rhythm and adjusted the positions of Ousmane and Michael, it made a big difference,” Deschamps said, as quoted by GFFN.

The France manager reserved particular praise for Barcola, whose introduction from the bench injected fresh energy into the attack. The Paris Saint-Germain winger needed only minutes to make an impact, calmly lifting the ball over Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after receiving a well-timed pass from Adrien Rabiot.

Deschamps emphasized that contributions from substitutes would prove crucial throughout the tournament, especially given the demanding schedule and depth required to compete for the title.

“What matters is what ‘Barco’ did today and what everyone else has to do when they are on the bench or when they come on,” Deschamps said. “It’s about making a contribution, and we’re going to need all of that.”

Although Mbappe once again dominated the headlines with another record-breaking performance, the official Man of the Match award went to Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Olise.

Olise orchestrated much of France’s attacking play, providing the assist for Mbappe’s opening goal and initiating the move that eventually led to the captain’s second strike. His creativity and composure between the lines consistently troubled Senegal’s defensive structure.

According to Flashscore statistics, Olise completed 25 of his 27 passes in the final third, achieving an impressive 93% passing accuracy. He also recorded two shots on target, completed two of his three dribble attempts, registered 77 touches, and produced seven progressive carries, earning a match rating of 9.0.

Mbappe nevertheless enjoyed another historic evening. His two goals lifted his international tally to 58, allowing him to surpass Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time leading scorer.

Remarkably, Mbappe reached the milestone in just 99 international appearances, significantly fewer than the 137 matches Giroud required to score his 57 goals.

The Real Madrid forward also continued his outstanding World Cup record, strengthening his reputation as one of the tournament’s most prolific performers.

France’s victory was far from straightforward. Senegal defended aggressively throughout the opening half and created several dangerous opportunities before France eventually broke through after the interval.

Deschamps acknowledged that patience was essential against such well-organized opposition and praised his players for maintaining their composure despite early frustration.

The coach also highlighted the value of squad depth, suggesting that every player would have an important role to play as the competition progresses.

With several elite attacking options available, including Mbappe, Dembele, Olise and Barcola, France possesses one of the deepest squads in the tournament, giving Deschamps considerable tactical flexibility.

Beyond the performance on the field, the veteran coach expressed gratitude to the thousands of French supporters who traveled to the United States to back the national team.

“Seeing so many French supporters there… I know they traveled a long way, and it was expensive for them,” Deschamps said.

“Football is magical when you win and can share those emotions together. Even though this was only the first match, we’re going to enjoy it.”

France now turns its attention to the remainder of Group I, where tougher challenges still await despite the encouraging start.

Deschamps cautioned that opening-match victories do not guarantee qualification, stressing that maintaining consistency over the coming fixtures will determine whether Les Bleus can fulfill expectations of another deep World Cup run.

For now, however, France leaves its opener with maximum points, renewed confidence and another memorable chapter in Mbappe’s remarkable international career, while Barcola’s game-changing cameo offered further evidence that Deschamps possesses the attacking depth needed to compete for football’s biggest prize.
