Kylian Mbappe is closing in on one of football’s most prestigious scoring records, but France’s captain insists individual accolades mean little compared to the pursuit of a third World Cup title for Les Bleus.

Mbappe’s two goals in France’s 3-0 victory over Iraq on Monday secured his side’s place in the knockout stage and lifted his career World Cup tally to 16, drawing him level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose and leaving him just two behind Lionel Messi’s all-time record.

Despite his prolific form, the 27-year-old forward has consistently rejected the narrative surrounding individual milestones, instead emphasizing collective success over personal achievement. Mbappe has scored 60 goals in 100 international appearances but continues to frame France’s campaign as a unified mission rather than an individual pursuit.

“I would play the entire World Cup without scoring if France win the trophy,” Mbappe said before the tournament, a remark that has taken on added significance as his performances continue to dominate headlines.

Against Iraq, Mbappe’s influence extended well beyond his goals. His work rate, defensive involvement and constant communication with teammates highlighted his leadership role within Didier Deschamps’ squad.

His relationship with Ousmane Dembele was particularly notable. With Dembele facing scrutiny after a quiet start to the tournament, Mbappe made a point of publicly celebrating his teammate’s late goal, underscoring the unity within the French camp.

Dembele, in turn, played a key role in Mbappe’s second goal, opting to pass rather than shoot before assisting the France captain. Mbappe responded by acknowledging his teammate during the celebration, pointing toward him immediately after scoring.

The mutual support has become a defining feature of France’s dressing room. Earlier in the tournament, Dembele defended Mbappe against criticism regarding his leadership and club form, describing the scrutiny as “very, very unfair” and reaffirming his importance to the squad.

France now appear to be operating with a strong sense of cohesion around their captain, whose influence extends far beyond his goalscoring output. Even as comparisons with Messi’s record intensify, Mbappe has remained steadfast in his focus on team objectives.

“There is no saga (with Messi). Leo has also scored, he scores and he will always score,” Mbappe said. “I don’t watch what he does, otherwise I will have to do more. I only look at my team. When you score goals, you get closer to this sphere but I repeat: for me it’s more important to see our progression.”

Mbappe remains the centerpiece of one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacks, supported by a deep pool of attacking talent including Dembele, Michael Olise, Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola and Rayan Cherki.

With multiple match-winners at their disposal, France’s success in North America may depend as much on Mbappe’s ability to elevate those around him as on his own finishing.

Should Mbappe leave the tournament with both the World Cup and the scoring record, it would represent a defining double in his career. For now, however, his words and actions suggest the trophy remains the only target that truly matters.
