The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is investigating an attack that killed an Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) member and injured three others, including one critically, in southern Lebanon on Sunday.

UNIFIL confirmed that a projectile exploded near its base in Adchit Al Qusayr, southern Lebanon, prompting the investigation. “We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation to determine all the circumstances,” the organization said in a statement on its Telegram channel on Monday.

The UN mission expressed its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the peacekeepers who lost their lives while performing their duties. “Our prayers and thoughts are with the injured peacekeepers, who are currently hospitalized with serious injuries,” UNIFIL added.

UNIFIL urged all parties to respect international law and ensure the safety of UN personnel and property. The organization emphasized that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701 and may amount to war crimes.

“Too many lives have been lost on both sides of the Blue Line in this conflict. There is no military solution. The violence must end,” UNIFIL stated.

Indonesia condemns the attack

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) condemned the attack, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. “Indonesia strongly condemns the incident and calls for a thorough and transparent investigation,” the ministry said via its X account on Monday.

Indonesia also expressed its deepest condolences for the TNI member who died while serving with UNIFIL. The ministry reiterated its condemnation of Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon and called on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty, halt attacks on civilians and infrastructure, and return to dialogue to prevent further escalation.

The incident highlights the continued risks faced by peacekeepers in conflict zones and underscores the urgent need for diplomacy to resolve tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
