Real Madrid are entering a period of significant transition and uncertainty in the 2025–2026 season, with growing pressure on the club’s sporting structure following inconsistent domestic performances and increasing speculation over the future of the head coach position.
The Spanish giants currently sit 11 points behind arch-rivals Barcelona in the LaLiga standings, a gap that has significantly weakened their title ambitions. The situation has placed interim manager Álvaro Arbeloa under intense scrutiny, as his initial appointment was widely viewed as a temporary solution rather than a long-term project.
With the league campaign slipping further out of reach, Real Madrid’s hierarchy is now actively evaluating potential long-term replacements. Club president Florentino Pérez is reportedly overseeing a shortlist of elite coaching candidates as the board prepares for a strategic decision that could define the next phase of the club’s sporting direction.
According to a report from Spanish radio station El Partidazo de COPE, Real Madrid have already made initial contact with Argentina national team head coach Lionel Scaloni, signaling serious interest in the World Cup-winning manager.
Alongside Scaloni, several high-profile names are believed to be under consideration, including Como 1907 coach Cesc Fàbregas, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, and France national team boss Didier Deschamps. Each candidate brings a distinct managerial profile, ranging from elite international experience to top-level European club success.
Scaloni, however, is seen as one of the most attractive options due to his recent achievements with Argentina. The 47-year-old guided his national team to both Copa América and FIFA World Cup glory, establishing himself as one of the most respected coaches in international football. His reputation for managing elite dressing rooms and handling world-class talent is considered a key factor in Madrid’s interest.
Despite the growing speculation, Scaloni remains under contract with the Argentine Football Association until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making any immediate move highly complex. The Argentine coach has also maintained a professional stance amid ongoing rumors linking him to European clubs.
In a press conference held in March, Scaloni addressed the speculation surrounding his future, making it clear that he remains focused on his current responsibilities.
“I am thinking about what will happen next; I am not someone who looks too far ahead,” he said, as quoted by Goal English on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
“I don’t think it is right to talk about it because it would distract from what is happening now,” he added.
“I have a very good relationship with the president, and if I had to sit down and talk, I would do it without any problems,” Scaloni continued.
While managerial speculation intensifies off the pitch, tensions within the Real Madrid dressing room are reportedly adding further pressure on Álvaro Arbeloa. The former full-back has struggled not only to close the points gap in LaLiga but also to maintain stability within the squad.
Reports suggest that Arbeloa’s relationship with several key players has deteriorated in recent weeks. Disputes have allegedly occurred with young defender Raúl Asencio, resulting in reduced playing time, while tensions have also been reported with club captain Dani Carvajal.
More recently, friction has emerged between Arbeloa and midfielder Dani Ceballos, further highlighting growing unrest within the squad. Ceballos was notably left out of the starting lineup in Real Madrid’s 1–1 draw against Real Betis on Friday, a decision reportedly linked to dissatisfaction over his post-injury playing time.
According to journalist Javier Herráez, speaking via Cadena SER and cited by Football España, the situation escalated internally prior to the match.
“Today he was not called because he had a dispute with the coach,” Herráez reported.
The journalist added that Ceballos felt he deserved more minutes following his recovery from injury, contributing to tensions between the player and coaching staff.
The situation has fueled speculation that Ceballos could seek a move away from the Santiago Bernabéu during the summer transfer window in search of regular playing time. Clubs such as Ajax and Real Betis are reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
Amid growing uncertainty, former Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has also emerged as a potential candidate for a return to the club. Mourinho, who previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, is credited with delivering multiple domestic trophies during his tenure and is believed to still hold interest in a return to the Spanish capital.
Despite this, no formal negotiations have been confirmed between the club and the Portuguese manager at this stage.
Mourinho’s potential return has divided opinion among supporters and figures associated with the club. While some view him as a proven winner capable of restoring competitiveness, others remain cautious about revisiting a previous era.
Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti Hernández has publicly expressed skepticism about the idea of reappointing Mourinho.
“Mourinho is a great coach, but I think the peak phase of his career is not a coincidence,” Guti said.
“In the sense that he came from Fenerbahçe, he took over Benfica at a very difficult time, and I believe there are coaches currently in better form than Mourinho that I would consider bringing in,” he added.
As Real Madrid continue to evaluate their managerial options, the club finds itself balancing short-term instability with long-term planning. The combination of poor league positioning, internal squad tensions, and high-profile coaching speculation has created a complex environment at one of Europe’s most successful football institutions.
With Barcelona maintaining a strong lead in LaLiga and the season approaching its decisive phase, the pressure on Real Madrid’s leadership to make a clear strategic decision continues to intensify. Whether the club opts for an international success story like Scaloni, a return of a familiar figure like Mourinho, or another elite candidate, the outcome will likely shape the direction of the Bernabéu for years to come.
